Global PC shipments rise, enterprise leads the way: report

Worldwide PC shipments reached 63.2 million units in the second quarter of 2025, a 4.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to preliminary figures released by Gartner, Inc. The growth reflects a modest recovery in the global PC market, driven primarily by enterprise demand amid ongoing Windows 11 migrations and desktop refresh cycles.

“In the second quarter of 2025, enterprise demand outpaced consumer demand, underpinned by Windows 11 migrations and pandemic-era desktop renewals, while consumer refreshes slowed as buyers deferred purchases,” said Rishi Padhi, Research Principal at Gartner.

Looking ahead, PC shipments are forecast to rise by 2.4 percent for the full year. This growth is expected to be front-loaded, particularly in the U.S., where concerns over tariffs have triggered an inventory surge. However, Gartner cautions that the second half of the year could see shipment growth plateau as vendors adjust inventory levels, potentially leading to oversupply by year-end.

From a regional standpoint, North America experienced a slight decline of 0.5 percent, while the Asia-Pacific market remained flat year-over-year — a sign of stabilisation after previous declines. The Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, by contrast, grew 5.3 percent, buoyed by stronger-than-usual seasonal demand and enterprise desktop replacements.

“The Windows 11 refresh cycle remains a key driver, particularly for desktop replacements,” Padhi added. “However, the expected surge in new device purchases has been subdued, as many organizations opt to update existing PCs to Windows 11 rather than invest in new hardware.”

Among the top five PC vendors, Lenovo recorded the highest year-over-year growth at 13.9 percent, followed by Apple at 13.4 percent and ASUS at 8.7 percent. HP Inc. posted more modest gains, while Dell saw a slight decline. Gartner’s data also indicates a contraction in shipments among smaller vendors, pointing to continued market consolidation.

Final figures will be published in Gartner’s full report, “Market Share Alert: Preliminary, PCs, Worldwide 2Q25.”
