Oracle and OpenAI have announced a new agreement to develop an additional 4.5 gigawatts of Stargate data centre capacity across the U.S. This major investment is set to create new jobs, support America’s reindustrialisation, and strengthen U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence. The expansion also marks a key milestone for Stargate—OpenAI’s AI infrastructure platform and long-term initiative to extend the benefits of AI to all.
With the new Oracle partnership adding to the ongoing Stargate I project in Abilene, Texas, the total AI data centre capacity under development will exceed 5 gigawatts. These centres will support more than 2 million chips, accelerating OpenAI’s progress toward its January commitment at the White House to invest $500 billion into 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure in the U.S. over the next four years. Due to strong collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank, OpenAI now expects to surpass that original goal.
The latest expansion is expected to generate over 100,000 jobs across construction and operations. This includes full-time roles at Stargate data centres, short-term construction jobs such as specialised electricians already active at the Abilene site, as well as indirect employment in manufacturing and local services.
Meanwhile, Stargate I construction in Abilene is advancing, with parts of the facility already operational. Oracle started delivering the first Nvidia GB200 racks last month, and OpenAI has begun running initial training and inference workloads using this new capacity to support next-generation AI research. Thousands of jobs have already been created at the site, with more to follow as operations grow. Workers include electricians, technicians, and equipment operators from over 20 states.
In parallel, OpenAI’s partnership with SoftBank is progressing with strong momentum. Both Oracle and SoftBank are key to meeting OpenAI’s growing compute demands. With SoftBank, efforts are underway on-site assessments and reimagining data centre designs to better support advanced AI.
Over the past six months, interest in Stargate has continued to grow, shaping and expanding OpenAI’s vision for its AI infrastructure. Stargate includes partnerships with Oracle, SoftBank, and CoreWeave, as well as international investments in U.S. infrastructure through OpenAI for Countries. Microsoft will remain a key cloud services provider for OpenAI through Stargate.
Stargate represents an ambitious vision to meet the historic opportunity AI presents. That vision is now taking shape through the strong backing of partners, governments, and investors globally including the White House, which has acknowledged the critical importance of AI infrastructure in driving innovation, economic growth, and national competitiveness.
Earlier in May, a global alliance of technology leaders—G42, OpenAI, Oracle, NVIDIA, SoftBank Group, and Cisco—had launched Stargate UAE, a major artificial intelligence infrastructure cluster to be developed in Abu Dhabi.
