Apple unveils foldable iPhone Duo as it expands AI-powered product lineup

Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with the introduction of iPhone Duo, alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5.

Apple has unveiled its latest generation of products, marking a significant expansion of its hardware portfolio with its first foldable iPhone and a stronger focus on artificial intelligence, health, and performance.

The headline launch is the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The device features a 7.6-inch inner display when opened and a 5.4-inch outer display when closed. Apple says the foldable model is its thinnest iPhone when opened and is designed to combine the portability of a conventional smartphone with a larger canvas for multitasking, gaming and content consumption.

The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and features a dual-battery architecture and custom vapor chamber for thermal management. Its camera system includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera with optical-quality 2x Telephoto capability and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The foldable design also introduces new camera experiences, including the ability to use the outer display as a preview when taking selfies with the rear cameras.

Apple has also tailored iOS 27 for the foldable form factor. The software introduces Split View multitasking, allowing two apps to run side by side, while the interface adapts as the device is folded, unfolded or reoriented. Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI are also integrated into the experience, bringing personal context understanding and on-screen awareness to the device.

Alongside the foldable, Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with upgrades focused on photography, performance, battery life and AI. Both models feature a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, giving users manual control over aperture as well as shutter speed, white balance and exposure through new Pro controls.

The Pro models are powered by the A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process and featuring a new Neural Engine designed to accelerate on-device AI workloads. Apple has also added a redesigned vapor chamber, while the Pro Max offers up to 45 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models.

Another notable development is Apple Reference Image, which allows users to create an unalterable reference version of a photograph using signed sensor data. Apple says the technology is designed to help verify the authenticity of images, an increasingly relevant capability as AI-generated and AI-edited content becomes more widespread.

The company also refreshed its wearable portfolio with Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Both introduce Apple’s new Health Sensing System, which provides higher-frequency heart-rate and heart-rate variability measurements and powers a new readiness feature designed to give users insight into their capacity for the day ahead.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 adds longer battery life, offering up to 50 hours for everyday use and up to 45 hours of outdoor workout tracking in its most extended mode. The device is powered by the S11 chip and continues to target sports and adventure users with advanced GPS, health and safety capabilities.

Completing the launch, Apple introduced AirPods 5, bringing Active Noise Cancellation to its open-ear AirPods design. Apple says the new model delivers up to 50 percent more external-noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC, while also adding improved sound quality, Adaptive EQ, Siri AI and Live Translation.

The new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available for pre-order from September 12, with retail availability beginning September 18. The iPhone Duo will follow later, with pre-orders opening October 16 and availability from October 23. Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 will also become available from September 18, while AirPods 5 will reach stores on the same date.

With the launch, Apple is positioning its latest devices around three increasingly connected themes — AI, intelligent personal technology and deeper health insights — while making its long-anticipated move into foldable smartphones.
