Today at VMworld 2019 Europe, VMware reinforced its vision of a software architecture that enables any app, on any cloud, to any device with the introduction of new technology offerings and strategic partnerships. The updates span VMware’s technology portfolio, with a spotlight on the company’s vision for intrinsic security and transformation in the way enterprises build, run, and manage software on Kubernetes.
During his keynote address, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said with the accelerating pace of innovation, technology today has a greater impact on every aspect of humanity. “We haven’t seen anything yet, and we are redefining what is possible. Technology has to be a force that brings us together, especially when our digital and daily lives have become one.”
Among a slew of new announcements made today at the event, the most important one is dubbed ‘Tanzu’, which aims to accelerate the adoption of Kubernetes in the enterprise. “We are committed to build, run, manage and protect any cloud environment for our customers, and Kubernetes is emerging as the magic layer that brings together the disparate worlds of IT operators and application developers. Kubernetes is much more than just a container orchestration technology,” said Gelsinger.
As part of this strategy, the VMware CEO spelled out details of Project Pacific, which combines the company’s crown jewel vSphere with Kubernetes. “This will help us to extend vSphere for all modern apps, and enable collaboration between DevOps and IT ops,” he said.
On the heels of its $2.1 billion acquisition of Carbon Black, which is expected to close by the end of this year, VMware has also announced new security solutions that advance the company’s vision of intrinsic security. “We are going to layer Carbon Black into all of our major platforms, including vSphere and NSX, providing for the first time an agent-less solution for workload security,” said Sanjay Poonen, COO of VMware.
Other major announcements included Project Maestro, a telco cloud orchestrator built to help communications service providers (CSPs) accelerate the time-to-market of modern network functions and services across clouds, from core to edge, and from private to public clouds. With this cloud-first orchestration solution, CSPs will be able to build and automate network services that span across a wider variety of network function formats, enabling interoperability and optimising their operations across every layer of the NFV and Telco Cloud architecture. The telco cloud orchestrator will deliver operational efficiency at scale to ultimately help CSPs accelerate time-to-market of new services, mitigate the cost of managing ever more complex networks, and improve customer experiences.
