Google launches initiative train 1,000 Nigerian developers

Google has announced the launch of a new initiative, Build with AI, in partnership with GOMYCODE, aimed at equipping 1,000 Nigerian developers with essential generative artificial intelligence (AI) skills.

John Kimani, Head of Developer Ecosystem for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, said the programme marks a significant step in accelerating Nigeria’s participation in the global AI economy. He noted that the initiative is designed to nurture a new generation of developers capable of building innovative products that address local challenges while competing globally.

The 11-week programme will provide participants with access to advanced AI tools, including Google’s Gemini, alongside a curriculum developed with oversight from Google experts. Delivered through GOMYCODE’s network of hacker spaces, the training will blend in-person classes with practical, mentored lab work, ensuring developers can apply new skills directly to real-world projects.

According to Kimani, the initiative comes at a pivotal time as industries across Nigeria and Africa increasingly rely on technology to drive economic growth and solve pressing challenges. He highlighted that key sectors such as fintech, healthtech, and agritech stand to benefit from AI-driven solutions emerging from the programme.

Babatunde Olaifa, Country Director of GOMYCODE Nigeria, said the partnership brings world-class curriculum and technology directly to local developers. “We are creating an environment where innovation can thrive, and we are excited to see the solutions that will emerge—built by Nigerians, for Nigeria and the world,” he said.

Applications for Build with AI are now open, with the programme set to culminate in a demo day where selected participants will showcase their AI-powered innovations to Google and industry leaders.
