This year OCR Studio opens its exhibition season with MWC Barcelona – the most influential trade show of the mobile communications industry, where the company will showcase a previously launched AI system for AR glasses. This is the first in the world technology that can independently scan IDs, documents of any type, and machine-readable objects directly on smart glasses and without data transmission. It also supports the next-generation ICAO/ISO MRZ standard which will be adopted globally within the next few years. The AI system will be demonstrated at Fira Gran Via, Spain’s largest fair venue, from 2 to 5 March 2026.
The key feature of this «wearable AI» is the ability to operate on processors with extremely limited computational resources while performing the recognition entirely on-device, without an internet connection. By contrast, other AI systems for smart glasses transmit data to clouds, external servers, or crowdsourcing platforms. This unique advantage was achieved by OCR Studio’s specialists thanks to the ultra-lightweight neural networks at the system’s core.
With this AI technology, AR glasses become a versatile device that extracts any data from ID documents of 250+ countries and issuers. By recognising ID cards, passports, or drivers’ licenses, it can estimate the document holder’s age, identify the issuing state, and detect signs of tampering, allowing businesses to conduct KYC procedures. In total, the system covers more than 4 000 document templates that are used in border control, banking, fintech, logistics, and other workflows. As the technology ensures full data locality, it also helps companies meet stringent data privacy regulations such as EU’s GDPR, Saudi Arabia’s PDPL, or China’s PIPL.
The system inherited some capabilities from the company’s flagship products – OCR BANK-scan and OCR MRZ-scan. Thus, it is able to capture payment card details as well as recognise the ID document’s machine-readable zone. It correctly handles not only the current ICAO Doc 9303 MRZ specifications but also the forthcoming ones – the next-generation format with an expanded system of document codes (such as PP, PD, PS, PT, and other letter combinations). Throughout the transition period, ID recognition with this AI system will stay reliable and near instant.
MWC Barcelona’s attendees will be given a special opportunity to test a prototype of these AI-powered AR glasses themselves. OCR Studio invites everybody to try these smart glasses on and test how accurately they recognise text and objects in their field of view.
