IBM’s Pinar Yucealp on immense growth opportunities for women in the tech landscape

Can you share your journey with us and what inspired you to pursue a career in this industry?

My journey in the dynamic realm of HR spans over many years, with significant stints in both Turkey and Dubai, two regions known for their promising technology landscapes. Prior to my role as Human Resources Director at IBM Middle East and Africa, I gained valuable experiences from leading organizations, fueling my passion for innovative HR practices. Witnessing technology’s transformative impact on every aspect of our lives, from communication to business operations, inspired me to thrive in an environment where change is embraced.

At IBM, I’ve found a platform to channel my passion for fostering positive workplace change. Empowering individuals and understanding their interactions are key to unlocking innovation’s full potential. IBM’s commitment to technology advancement, diversity, and inclusion aligns with my values, driving impactful change in the technology industry and beyond.

How are women in technology uniquely positioned to drive growth and innovation?

The evolving landscape of technology provides immense opportunities for growth and innovation. Initiatives promoting women empowerment are opening doors for leadership roles, fostering a more inclusive business environment.

In the Middle East, where technology and women’s empowerment initiatives are gaining momentum, the abundance of opportunities is particularly promising. As the region embraces diversity and inclusivity, women in technology have the chance to leverage their skills and expertise, contributing to the growth and innovation of the industry and laying the groundwork for a future that is inclusive and empowering for all.

What unique contributions do women bring to the IT field?

In the Middle East, women empowerment initiatives are on the rise, and this is creating new opportunities for women to enter leadership positions. As found in the in the recent IBM study, titled Female Leadership in the Age of AI found that 81% of UAE business leaders acknowledge that increased female leadership in the sector is essential for mitigating gender bias in AI. Moreover, 82% believe women’s leadership is vital for ensuring equitable economic benefits from technology. As more women assume leadership roles, they inspire and pave the way for other women to follow in their footsteps, enabling the realization of a more gender-diverse and inclusive business landscape.

Women bring invaluable contributions to the IT field, enriching it with diverse perspectives, innovative ideas, and exceptional leadership skills. The recent appointments of women in technology in the UAE, such as Dena Almansoori as the Group Chief AI & Data Officer at e& and Moza Omar Al Futtaim as the Chief AI Officer at Al-Futtaim Group, exemplify the significant impact women are making in this industry. Without a doubt, women are actively redefining the C-suite and entrepreneurial leadership in today’s business world. With their unique perspectives and exceptional leadership skills, women are driving key strategic decision-making and fostering a culture more open to change.
