Data virtualisation: The new infrastructure

by CXO Staff

Gabriele Obino, Vice President Southern Europe & Middle East, Denodo, explains how data virtualisation is transforming access, governance, and real-time intelligence across the UAE’s rapidly evolving digital landscape

Data virtualisation: The new infrastructure

The UAE’s data centre market is booming — what key factors are driving this surge, and how does Denodo fit into this landscape?

The UAE’s data centre market is expanding rapidly due to widespread digital transformation, strong government support for cloud adoption, and the growing demand from AI technologies that require heavy computing power.

As organisations store data across multiple platforms and regions, solutions like a virtual data layer – that let them use data directly without moving it – are considered essential. Denodo helps these organisations use all that data efficiently, securely and in real time, without the drag of heavy duplication or slow integration. That makes it a strategic fit for businesses operating in the UAE’s booming digital infrastructure landscape.

Gabriele Obino, Vice President – Southern Europe & Middle East, Denodo

Data is growing faster than organisations can manage it. How does data virtualisation address this complexity in real time?

Data is growing faster than most companies can physically move, clean or integrate it. Data virtualisation helps by showing all the information across different systems while leaving the data in place, enabling queries in real-time. This lets teams access and analyse data instantly, cutting delays and avoiding duplication.

What are the biggest misconceptions about data virtualisation among regional businesses?

Many people think data virtualisation just copies data, but that’s not true – it connects data to where it already exists. Others assume it’s only good for light or low-risk workloads, when it can actually handle large, complex ones. Some also believe it weakens security because you’re not moving data, while it can strengthen governance instead.

How is eliminating physical data movement improving agility, security, and compliance for enterprises in the UAE?

When you stop physically moving data, companies can access and share information faster and more securely. It reduces the risk of data leaks during transfers and helps meet strict local rules around privacy and storage, which is especially crucial for businesses operating in the UAE’s regulated sectors.

With AI adoption accelerating, what role does data virtualisation play in delivering faster, more accurate insights?

AI requires clean and up-to-date data. Data virtualisation helps by allowing real-time access to integrated data from different systems without waiting for new pipelines or copies. This means AI tools and machine-learning models can use more recent and complete data, producing faster and more accurate results as they scale.

How is Denodo supporting national initiatives like the Smart Data Framework and Dubai Data Strategy?

By creating a logical data-access layer, organisations can share and use data across public and private sectors without duplicating it aligning with national initiatives focused on interoperability, data sovereignty and smarter governance. This approach enables more fluid and governed data flows across cities, states and different sectors.

As data becomes the new infrastructure, how should CIOs and partners rethink their data strategies for 2025 and beyond?

CIOs should shift away from just thinking about storing lots of data and focus instead on how quickly and reliably data can be accessed and used. This means building systems that allow real-time access, work smoothly across hybrid environments (cloud and on-prem), and give employees self-service tools to find and use data on their own.

How can channel partners leverage Denodo’s platform to help clients modernise and monetise their data?

Channel partners can help clients bring their data together in one place, making it easier to see and use. By using Denodo’s platform, they can connect existing systems without replacing them, reduce duplicate work, and quickly turn useful data into new business insights or revenue opportunities.

Finally, what’s your vision for data-driven transformation in the Middle East over the next five years?

In the next five years, the Middle East will evolve from “catching up” to being a leader in data-enabled services. Real-time access, governed sharing, AI-driven insights and cloud-native architectures will fuel new business models. Data will become a strategic asset not just for tech teams but for entire economies. The foundation will be a layer that lets people use data when and where it matters.
